The Basilica of Santo Spirito is not only an extraordinary architectural complex of the Florentine Renaissance, but a living place, in which the spiritual, communal, and cultural dimensions continue to intertwine every day.
Around the Basilica gathers a community that, for centuries, has safeguarded and renewed a tradition rooted in prayer, study, hospitality, and dialogue.
The life of the Basilica is expressed through the liturgy, the presence of the Augustinian Friars, and a constant openness to cultural dialogue, in a continuity that links the present to its deepest roots.
Celebrations
The liturgy constitutes the beating heart of life at Santo Spirito.
Celebrations accompany the daily rhythm of the Basilica, offering the faithful and visitors moments of prayer, listening, and recollection, in respect for the sacredness of the place.
Liturgical celebrations mark the time of the community and keep alive the bond between the Basilica and the neighborhood, welcoming those who wish to take part in moments of worship, in a space that remains above all a place of faith.
The Augustinian Community
The Basilica of Santo Spirito is entrusted to the Friars of the Order of Saint Augustine, present in Florence since the thirteenth century.
The Augustinian community safeguards not only the building itself, but above all its spiritual identity, founded on interior search, communal life, and dialogue between faith and reason.
The friars accompany the pastoral life of the Basilica and promote paths of welcome, listening, and reflection, in continuity with a tradition that has made Santo Spirito one of the most significant spiritual and cultural centers of the city.
Conferences and Meetings
Alongside prayer and community life, Santo Spirito has always been a place of thought and dialogue.
As early as the second half of the fourteenth century, around the figure of Friar Luigi Marsili, the convent hosted meetings and discussions involving humanists, intellectuals, and leading figures of Florentine cultural life.
This vocation for dialogue was renewed in the twentieth century by Father Gino Ciolini, who gave new life to the Conferences of Santo Spirito, restoring to the Augustinian complex its role as a space open to theological, philosophical, and civic reflection.
Even today, conferences and meetings represent a fundamental moment of openness to the city, in continuity with a tradition that unites faith, culture, and contemporary life.
A Life That Continues
The life of the Basilica of Santo Spirito thus unfolds in a constant balance between prayer, community, and culture.
A place that belongs not only to history, but to the living present of Florence, where each day an experience of listening, sharing, and spiritual searching is renewed.
